September 16th, 1990: Yeovil Town Ladies FC (formerly Yetminster Ladies) take on Weymouth Vikings in their first ever game and draw 2-2. Fast forward 24 years to February 2014 and the club is about to embark on it’s most exciting venture to date…the FA Women’s Super League.
Making history comes naturally to the female Glovers. In the last 24 years the club has accomplished some outstanding achievements, including being Somerset FA Women’s Cup winners 4 times, taking numerous league title trophies, winning Somerset FA Women’s club of the Year, the FA Women’s Digital Club of the Year, and, most recently, the coveted FA Respect & Fair Play Gold Award for 2012 & 2013.
They now have the chance to add a new type of trophy to their cabinet, the FA Women’s Super League. The FA WSL is the highest division of women’s football in England, comprising of 18 teams across two leagues. Yeovil Town Ladies will compete against the likes of Watford, Doncaster Rover Belles, Sunderland, Aston Villa and Reading to name just a few.
Speaking on the club’s appointment to the FA WSL 2, Team Manager Sarah Lawler says: “I want us to compete against every team we face, play to our game plan and establish ourselves as a team worth watching so we get some great home crowds at our primary ground, Sherborne Town FC. The Club ethos is ‘Achieve by Unity’ and we will need to work together to use the first season as a great opportunity to learn and develop”.
